The property was built between 1831 and 1844 and is well-known for its rich local history, notably serving as the first national headquarters of the Aslef Railway Union in the 1880’s. It later became a public house and was renowned as one of the best sports pubs in Leeds having been run by former Leeds United legend Peter Lorimer after his retirement from football in 1987 until it closed in 2018. The Commercial now forms part of a larger masterplan called Sweetfields with the site being redeveloped into Leeds’ newest neighbourhood, accelerating the regeneration of the city’s historic, industrial South Bank area. Boasting a vibrant mix of residential, office and commercial uses , Sweetfields will be home to over 1,350 residences, hundreds of office workers, and a new public square. At the heart of this regeneration lies The Commercial Inn, Sweetfield’s social and cultural hub, with deep-rooted connections to the history of Leeds. The existing building is being retained and works to refurbish the property and provide a new extension are due to complete in Q1 2027. The extension will provide additional indoor seating at ground floor along with a large roof terrace on the first floor.
