Beloved Weston Odeon Will Close in June

Adored Odeon says goodbye

The Weston-super-Mare Odeon cinema has a rich and fascinating history that dates back to the early 20th century. The cinema was first opened in 1935 and quickly became a popular destination for movie-goers in the local area.

In its early years, the cinema was known as the Regal and was owned and operated by the Rank Organisation. The building itself was designed by the renowned cinema architect William R. Glen and boasted an impressive Art Deco façade that still stands today.

During the Second World War, the cinema was used as a venue for fundraising events and as a meeting place for local war committees.

In the years following the war, the cinema continued to thrive and underwent several renovations to keep up with the changing times.

In the 1960s, the cinema was purchased by the Odeon chain and renamed the Odeon Weston-super-Mare. It continued to be a popular destination for movie-goers throughout the following decades, but by the 1990s, the building was beginning to show its age and was in need of a major refurbishment.

In 1998, the cinema underwent a major renovation that saw the interior completely modernized and updated with new seating, sound systems, and screens. The exterior of the building was also restored to its former glory, with the Art Deco façade given a fresh coat of paint and new lighting installed.

The Odeon Weston-super-Mare continued to operate successfully throughout the early 2000s.

But in 2018, the BBC announced that the cinema would be closing its doors for good.

And today, a spokesperson has said the 5th of June may be the last day the cinema could open. The Weston-super-Mare Odeon once stood as a symbol of the town's cinematic heritage. Today, many locals are casting their minds back to the good old days. We all have fond memories of the cinema with nostalgia.
